Damon West is taking his story to a global stage.
In his book, “The Change Agent: How a Former College QB Sentenced to Life in prison Transformed His Life,”
West chronicled:
- His rise as a college quarterback and fall to drug addiction
- His 65-year prison sentence and transformation to a new life
- Renewed faith in God and new mission to help others.
He will chat alongside the Rev. Mitch Pacwa, a Jesuit priest, on Eternal Word Television Network, or EWTN, at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
“This is completely a God thing,” West, now a motivational speaker, said of the chance to tell his story EWTN which has a global reach. “There’s no other way to explain it. So many doors have opened for me provided I go out and serve others and be a positive force for change.”
West met “Father Mitch” at a state conference for the Kolbe Prison Ministry in summer 2017. The two became natural friends, as both feel the need to minster to those who are incarcerated.
He said his greatest impact is with the incarcerated and believes this is where God wants him to go and, in a unique twist, he can go into any prison and have something in common — he was once a prisoner.
The trip
But West won’t travel alone. Friend, supporter and businessman Joe Tortorice, who with his wife Shelley, are offering their plane to transport West, his mom and aunt, Stiles Prison Chaplain Steve Doucet, Dr. Mark Kubala and Monsignor Jerry McGrath to the EWTN studio in Alabama for the event.
“Damon is a real example of someone who turned their life around and anything I can do for him, I will,” Tortorice said.
West’s book is available locally at the Museum of the Gulf Coast.
