First place for Bridge City now belongs to Hardin-Jefferson.

Bridge City has fallen from the top of District 22-4A baseball standings to third place after the district executive committee ruled Wednesday the Cardinals must forfeit three varsity games and two junior varsity games. The committee determined a BC student-athlete who shared time between varsity and junior varsity competed in more than three invitational tournaments plus 17 baseball games in a season, including all games prior to the first playoff game, therefore violating UIL policy.

The policy and penalty were posted on the Orange Leader’s website.

“In accordance with Section 29:b3 of the UIL Constitution and Contest Rules, the DEC (District 22-4A executive committee) administered the minimum penalty for an ineligible player,” a statement from the executive committee read. “A DEC shall forfeit the contest won by the individual or school, as a minimum penalty, if it finds that an individual contestant was not eligible to participate in the contest.”

With the loss, Bridge City’s records fall to 16-9-2 overall and 7-4 in 22-4A. Hardin-Jefferson is now 16-7 and 11-1, with Little Cypress-Mauriceville at 22-7 and 9-2.

BC has a home game against West Orange-Stark on Friday to close 22-4A play and will close the regular season against Big Sandy on Saturday.

 

SOFTBALL

Sabine Pass 9, Somerville 3

Jaizee Landry tossed 13 strikeouts and batted 3 for 4 in leading Sabine Pass to a 9-3 win over Somerville on Wednesday in a 2A bi-district game in New Caney.

Gracie Hensley went 3 for 4 as well for the Sharks (13-8), while Kayleigh Kingston was 2 for 4 and Jamesia Jones 1 for 3.

Sabine Pass will take on Shiner or Milano in the area round. Shiner shut out Sabine Pass 10-0 in last year’s area round contest.
