The Bulldogs’ second straight defeat cost them a second straight title. They won the 2018 22-5A title and lost to Barbers Hill in the 5A Region III quarterfinals, but began the week with the inside track on the 21-5A title with an unbeaten district mark.

Conner Kemp struck out seven and allowed three runs on five hits in a complete game, but four of those hits came in the third inning. Greg Smith and River Orsak doubled before Trevor Turnbough brought the two home on a single. Cameron Cauley then doubled and Camden Guarnere drove in a run on a fielder’s choice.

Landon Hiltz, Omar Mascorro, Brock Holton and Kamden Grant each had a hit off Guarnere, who struck out seven in a complete-game win.

Nederland (16-9-2, 10-2 in 21-5A) will take on Galveston Ball in the 5A bi-district round. Wednesday’s game will be held in Nederland, and Thursday’s game will be held in Galveston with a Friday game, if necessary, in Crosby.

Barbers Hill improved to 20-6-2 and 11-1.

PNG 1, Vidor 0

In Port Neches, Grant Rogers tossed 13 strikeouts and earned a shutout win on the Indians’ senior night.

Rogers held the Pirates to two hits, while the Indians (16-12-1, 9-3 in 21-5A) managed three (Ryan Sosa, Blake Bost and Austin Schaper). Sosa and Schaper doubled. Bost stole home plate in the fifth inning after leading off with a single.

Cory Kizer tossed four strikeouts for Vidor in six innings.

PNG will play Friendswood in a series at Crosby on Thursday and Friday with a third game, if necessary, Saturday.

Bridge City 9, West Orange-Stark 6

Two nights after the District 22-4A executive committee ruled Bridge City had to forfeit three wins, the Cardinals sought a measure of redemption and beat the rival Mustangs at home.

Three runs in the fifth for the Mustangs tied the game at 6-6, but Shane Foreman hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of that inning to put the Cardinals (17-9-2, 8-4 in 22-4A) ahead for good. Jackson Tims crossed the plate on Cace Skinner’s fielder’s choice two at-bats later to set the final score.

Logan Hamm smashed a three-run home run as part of a four-run second inning, helping Bridge City come back from a 3-0 deficit. Tanner Wilson and Cameron Yadon each had two hits, with Sam Carpenter getting the other hit in the win.

SOFTBALL

Crosby 2, Nederland 0

In Crosby, Maggie Herdejurgen’s two-run home run in the first inning was all Crosby (22-9) needed to seal the 5A bi-district series win over Nederland (21-15).

Crosby had five hits to Nederland’s four, but Destini Trahan kept the Cougars off the scoreboard after the homer by striking out eight. Trahan finished her senior season with 263 strikeouts.

Grace Sparks fanned five for the win but gave up two hits to Hannah Grumbles and one each to Brittany Taylor and Alyssa Collazo.

Santa Fe 2, PNG 0

As the Crosby-Nederland game unfolded at The Ballparks in Crosby, PNG (18-10) found no luck plating a run in a single-game 5A bi-district battle with Santa Fe.

Three errors came back to haunt the purple-and-white Indians, as the green-and-gold Indians scored a run each in the fourth and sixth innings.

Sadie Shrestha, Bayja Newby, Cameron Niedenthal and Taylor Dominguez each had a hit for PNG. Santa Fe (16-8) totaled five hits.
