SOFTBALL: Northwestern State ends Lamar’s season

NATCHITOCHES, La. — The Lamar softball team found itself in a win or go home game in their first trip to the conference tournament since 2017. Lamar could not get its bats going in the game as Northwestern State limited Lamar to two hits as the Lady Demons defeated the Cardinals, 4-0.
Jade Lewis and Savana Mata picked up the two hits for the Cardinals in the contest. Aaliyah Ruiz picked up the loss for LU as she pitched four innings while allowing four runs.
LU picked up its first hit of the game in the top of the first inning, when Jade Lewis singled to right field. In the second inning the next three Cards would be retired ending the inning.
With one out in the top of the third inning, Savana Mata picked up the second hit of the game when she singled to shortstop. However, she would be the only hit in the inning for LU.
The Lady Demons struck first in the bottom of the third inning. Northwestern State led off the inning with back-to-back bunt singles putting two on for Cayla Jones. She followed with her ninth home run of the season putting NSU ahead, 3-0. Following the home run, Cards pitcher Aaliyah Ruiz settled down and retired the next three hitters.
Northwestern State added to the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Perry led off with a double and went to third on a fly out. The run came into score on a St. Clair singled to the shortstop putting the Lady Demons ahead, 4-0.
Coming to bat in the top of the seventh inning, LU needed four runs to keep the game alive. However, the Cardinals could not get anything going as they were retired in order.
