Lamar junior J.C. Correa made second-team All-Southland Conference when the league released its baseball honors recipients Monday.
Correa, a junior college transfer and brother of Houston Astro Carlos Correa, led the team in batting (.332), hits (74), doubles (14) home runs (10) and RBIs (44). He posted a .529 slugging percentage and drew 17 walks.
Two Lamar players were named third-team All-Southland: junior second baseman Logan Berlof and senior pitcher Jason Blanchard. Berlof batted .332 after missing the first 14 games of the season but collected 48 hits in 40 games. Blanchard posted a 3.12 ERA and was tied for third in the Southland in strikeouts with 87.
Groves product Cole Girouard was one of three Cardinals to make the honorable mention list, joining Robin Adames and Avery George. Girouard, a 2016 Port Neches-Groves graduate and outfielder, started 0 for 22, but hit .292 with 47 hits (four doubles, three triples and two home runs). During conference play, Girouard ranked eighth in batting average at .364.
Senior third baseman Adames pulled within four hits of Lamar’s all-time hits record with 252. He batted .266 with 57 hits (four doubles, a triple and eight home runs) and drove in 21 runs as a senior.
George, a sophomore outfielder, hit safely during a streak of 20 games earlier this year. He went 5 for 5 in one game and trailed only Correa with 72 hits on the season. As a season-long leadoff, the Humble native batted .323.
