PNG testing lineup adjustments against Cleveland

Coach Kara Skinner is still looking for someone to help balance the Port Neches-Groves Indians’ offense.

She’s been looking for someone all season, but she’ll see what she can get with some of the adjustments she’s made when Cleveland’s Indians pay the purple and white Indians a visit on Friday at 7 p.m.

“I’ve been saying this all season and I’m still looking for it, just a third person, fourth person to step up and kind of take some pressure off of Maylin [Stampley] and Mollee [Priddy],” Skinner said. “We’ve pulled some kids up, and I think they’re doing well. I’m looking for some big things from them. Just kind of meshing it all together, we’re kind of seasoned now with the people that we have, so we’re looking to build on that.

“I’m looking to change some things up a little bit, so that’s my expectation for this game, just to see how those changes work and make adjustments from there.”

The Cleveland Indians were better than PNG had seen last year when the two teams played earlier, Skinner said. Her squad still came out on top, 63-23, at Cleveland on Dec. 20.

Still winless, Cleveland was defeated by Vidor 47-32 Tuesday while PNG took its bye.

“You always take something from the game before. They were a little bit better than we saw last year,” Skinner said. “They’re aggressive, they pressure the ball well, they’ve got some speed, and so I think those are things we have to be aware of. Any team we don’t box out against, we struggle not turning the ball over and making sure we convert on the offensive side of things.”

Skinner knows her team is capable of competing well, even against teams like Barbers Hill, which still hasn’t lost a District 21-5A game. The Indians were beaten 73-49 on Jan. 14 but held on strong in the first half to trail the Eagles by only five, Skinner said.

“These kids can compete,” she said. “They amaze me sometimes, and they’re a really good team, Barbers Hill. That’s a testament to these kids that people need to know. The second half was a different story, but when we held them in the first half, and that was little ol’ PNG.”

Skinner said she is someone who won’t be satisfied, that she will keep finding ways to make adjustments, all with an eye toward competing in the playoffs.

“I’m still trying to finagle some things,” she said “I’m always thinking about what’s going to suit us well. I don’t think you can be satisfied. I think you’ve got to keep trying things, keep researching, keep studying, keep getting film on people. I think the second you start resting and the second you feel like you’ve got it all in the bag, that’s when it’s going to creep up on you. I’m never satisfied. We’ve won some games where you walk away feeling like you haven’t won because you feel like you need to work on so much stuff.”
