PORT NECHES — Amaree Abram came close to outscoring Port Neches-Groves all by himself.
Abram exploded for 24 of Memorial’s 35 points in the second quarter and scored a game-high 37 points Tuesday in an 80-39 rout of the Indians at The Reservation. The win is the 14th in a row for the 5A fourth-ranked Titans (26-5, 9-0 in 21-5A), who hold a one-game lead over Nederland in the district and are nearing their fourth straight district championship.
The Titans opened up a 16-10 lead after one period and led 52-18 at halftime, due in large part of Abram’s outside shooting. Held to one 3-point basket in the first quarter, Abram sank three more in the second and finished the game with five treys.
Kenneth Lofton Jr. had 15 points and Nate Clover added eight in the win. Noah Marchak scored all 12 of his points on 3-point shots to lead fourth-place PNG (12-18, 3-6), whose bid for a second straight playoff berth took a hit. Khristian Curtis threw in seven points for PNG.
The Titans will host Cleveland on Friday, visit Dayton next Tuesday and close the regular season at home against Nederland on Feb. 14. PNG will visit Barbers Hill on Friday and host Vidor and Cleveland next week, with the latter game potentially determining the final playoff spot from 21-5A. PNG beat Cleveland in a fourth-place tiebreaker last year.
