When CHRISTUS Southeast Texas St. Mary hospital closed its doors for good in July, it marked a time of uncertainty for many in the Port Arthur, Port Neches, Groves and Nederland.

Perhaps no segment of the community was more up in the air than expectant mothers.

For many, the closure of St. Mary hospital brought questions about where they would receive prenatal and postpartum care. Thankfully, the answer was the same as it had been: CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Maternity and Women’s Health Center.

The CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Maternity and Women’s Health Center offers a full-range of obstetric care, prenatal care for normal and high-risk pregnancies, postpartum care and routine ultrasounds.

The center, located 3535 Gates Blvd., Suite 116 in Port Arthur, also provides a variety of pregnancy and new mother classes — providing insight and reassurance about the birth experience.

New mothers can also meet with a lactation consultant over any breastfeeding concerns. And, CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Maternity and Women’s Health Center is certified under the Texas 10-Step Program — providing another resource for breastfeeding mothers in South County.

“It was very important to us that we ensure our Women’s Services would remain as a steady, visible health care option for women here in South County,” said Rhonda Dixon, advanced practice registered nurse and certified nurse midwife at CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Maternity and Women’s Health Center.

“We wanted to ensure that our patients could continue to receive the same care, close to home, but now with the ability to deliver through coordinated care at CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth hospital — where they would have access to expert care and the region’s only Level III NICU.”

CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Maternity and Women’s Health Center provides gynecological care, including well-woman exams, pap smears, pelvic and breast exams and bone density exams. Patients will also receive menopausal care, colonoscopy and mammography referrals and screening and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases.

CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Maternity and Women’s Center also provides a Certified Community Health Worker who can help patients apply for health care benefits. Staff can also help patients establish a Primary Care Physician and offer medication assistance.

The Center’s staff is bilingual in Spanish and English, offers sign language support and has access to dozens of other languages through computer software.

Additionally, if you are on Medicaid, under-insured or have no insurance at all, you can receive quality women’s care close to home, under the CHRISTUS name which you’ve known and trusted for 90 years.
