Golf at all levels is pretty much on hold as those in positions of authority continue to process fallout from the coronavirus. That includes area high school teams whose seasons are have seen suspended by the University Interscholastic League until at least March 29.

Just around the corner for area schoolboy and schoolgirl teams are district tournaments scheduled for March 30-31. Regionals are slated a couple of weeks later.

“We are awaiting word from the UIL,” said PN-G boys coach Jerry Honza. “All UIL sanctioned events are postponed through at least March 29. Alternate schedules (Plan B, Plan C, Plan D) are being discussed daily. This includes golf tournaments.”

Among the golf casualties, at least temporarily, is the PN-G boys golf three-person scramble fundraiser planned for Saturday at Babe Zaharias. Honza hopes to reschedule down the line and says he’ll continue to take entries. He can be reached at jhonz@pngisd.org or 409 719-3949.

Meanwhile, virtually everything in relation to the return of pro golf is up in the air. The PGA tour was initially going to be put on hold through the Valero Texas Open, then came word that Masters officials had decided to postpone golf’s most high profile event April 9-12,

Once that happened, all the lower level tours had no choice but to suspend operations. That meant that Korn Ferry Tour events planned in Lafayette and Lake Charles the next two weeks were toast.

The inaugural Lake Charles event at the Golden Nugget would have been doomed anyway because all Louisiana casinos are being shuttered indefinitely.

Bottom line for golfers is this. Don’t pass up an opportunity to play the game you love. Coronavirus concerns may soon be responsible for indefinitely closing the course you play.
