Beginning in two weeks we will be adding hunting reports to the weekly fishing report. These reports will focus mainly on dove and waterfowl hunting but also give some reports on rutting activity for whitetails and other related information.

    We have been giving hunting reports now for a few years and they have been very popular.

     They are our way of continually bringing you the best outdoors coverage in the region and saying thanks to all of the loyal readers.

    Now onto the report:

    North Sabine/Neches River — The mid lake area has been fair for trout and reds on live shad and avocado-colored plastics drifted on the bottom. Flounder action picked up mid-week with some nice fish caught along the Louisiana shoreline on live mud minnows.

     South Sabine — The Louisiana shoreline from Madame Johnson Bayou to Blue Buck Point has been fair to good or schooling trout and redfish on topwaters early and on live bait fished on the bottom. Black drum are good on shrimp fished on the reef. Very few reports of flounder.

    Sabine Pass — Very few anglers at the jetties and offshore since the storms hit the Gulf. Keith Lake has been fair to good for trout around the cut and on the main lake itself under birds early and late. Alligator gar are good in the Taylors Bayou outfall area on cut mullet.

    Lake Calcasieu — The Hackberry Rod and Gun Club reports the south end has been very good for trout and reds on wedgetails and live bait. The marshes along the Intracoastal between Hackberry and Orange have been very good for redfish on spoons. Flounder are fair in the channel on live finger mullet.

    Sabine River — The fishing has been good for alligator garfish on mullet fished under corks from the Port of Orange to the Dupont Outfall Canal. Redfish are fair around the Dupont Outfall Canal on spoons and soft plastics. Very few reports of bass.

    Rayburn Lake — Guide Roger Bacon reports crappie are very good over brush piles on the main lake on shiners. The fish are biting anywhere from 15 to 25 feet. Largemouths are fair on small spinners and topwaters fished on the main lake around schooling action. A few larger bass are coming at night on dark red and purple-colored Texas-rigged worms fished along grass lines.  Catfish are good around baited boat docks on nightcrawlers.

    Toledo Bend — Holly Park Marina reports largemouths are schooling and taking tailspins and slab spoons fished over main lake humps on the north end. White bass are schooling in the same areas and taking spoons and live bait. Crappie are fair to good around the Pendleton Bridge on live shiners fished under lights at night. There are also some fish coming from around baited boat docks. Catfish are fair on shrimp and cheese bait fished around baited holes.

   Lake Livingston — Penwaugh Marina reports slow action for stripers with white bass remaining good on pet spoons and diving crankbaits. Largemouths are fair on Texas-rigged worms and small buzz baits fished early and late around shoreline brush and grass.  Crappie are good on shiners fished on main lake brush in deep water. Channel catfish are fair around baited boat docks. Blue and flathead catfish are slow.
