The Memorial Titans claimed their first basketball playoff win in program history with Tuesday’s 54-46 win over Pasadena Dobie. While Dobie managed to make keep things interesting with a few runs, Memorial stayed in control for most of the contest and shot well from the free throw line to preserve the victory and move onto the second round of the Region III Class 5A playoffs where the Titans will meet Fort Bend Travis at the Phillips Fieldhouse in Pasadena at 8 p.m. Friday.
Out of Richmond, the Travis Tigers are 25-9 overall and beat Clear Springs 62-48 in the first round. The Tigers were 9-4 in District 23-5A which was good enough for third place.
Travis’ best player is 5-9 point guard is Ray Penn who is averaging 21 points per game this season. Penn, a senior, has signed to play with Oklahoma State. He was also 23-5A’s MVP in 2008 when Travis failed to make the playoffs.
This is Travis’ second year as a school and first in the postseason, making Tuesday’s playoff victory their first as well.
Meanwhile, Memorial moved to 25-7 overall after defeating Dobie.
On top of some solid shooting from the charity stripe, Port Arthur bigs Darius Harris and JaMarqus Jones were able to provide the Titans with great post play.
Harris tallied 15 points while Jones was good for 13.
Harris, at 6-8, and Jones, at 6-5, join other Memorial forwards Tevin Turner (6-2) and John Evans (6-4) as potential matchup problems for Travis. Also on the bench for Memorial is 6-8 Darius Juneau and 6-5 Jordan Reno.
The Tigers, meanwhile, have just four players listed at 6-3 or better and their tallest player is 6-5 Drew Onyebuchi. Sophomore forward Anthony Odunsi, who is 6-3, is the team’s second leading scorer with 13 points per game.
The winner between Memorial and Travis will meet the winner of Hightower and Deer Park on Monday or Tuesday of next week.
