The best performance of the week by a professional golfer with Southeast Texas ties belonged to West Orange-Stark ex Michael Arnaud. Playing in the Korn Ferry Tour’s Price Cutter Championship in Springfield, Missouri, Arnaud posted a season best tie for ninth.

It could have been much better. Arnaud, who won a Korn Ferry event two years ago, opened with rounds of 66-65 and was sitting in second place a stroke off the lead heading into the weekend. He was still tied for second, three back, after a third-round 70. But a closing one-under-71 dropped him back seven places.

Lamar ex Dawie van der Walt finished four shots behind Arnaud and was T28.

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was also competing in the Price Cutter on a sponsor exemption but he didn’t last long. Romo withdrew after four holes because of a wrist injury. The same problem forced him out of the American Century Celebrity Championship a week earlier. …

Chris Stroud returns this week to the event where he recorded his only PGA Tour victory — the Barracuda Championship. The Barracuda is the only tournament on the tour played under a Stableford format, with players getting six points for a double eagle, five for an eagle and two for a birdie.

Pars count zero, while a player loses one point on a bogey and three if he takes a double bogey.

When Stroud won in 2017, the tournament was played at Montreux Golf Club in Reno. It was moved this year to a Jack Nicklaus course — Old Greenwood — in nearby Truckee, California. Stroud is coming off a WD last week in Minnesota where a migraine prompted him to pull out on the back nine of the second day. He’d opened with a 72, then shot 38. …

Andrew Landry, who has struggled somewhat since the PGA Tour’s restart, is playing in the high dollar WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational Championship event in Memphis starting Thursday. Landry, in four starts since golf’s return, has a T49, a T33 and back-to-back missed cuts.

Where that has hurt most is in FedEx Cup standings. With the playoffs starting in three weeks, he’s dropped to 41st in points. That’s still good, but being in the top 30 after the first two playoff stops would get him into the Tour Championship. He’ll need a couple of strong showings to get there.

PNG ex Karlei Hemler’s first taste of professional golf was a bit bumpy. Hemler, playing as an amateur in the Women’s APT Conway (Arkansas) Open shot rounds of 82-83 and was 37th out of 38 players before withdrawing. She is set to play her senior year of college golf at Northeastern State in Oklahoma. …

Braden Bailey is in the 156-player field for the Texas State Open being played Tuesday through Friday at The Cascades Club in Tyler. The tournament offers a purse of $120,000. …

The Monday Senior 50 Plus 2 ball was played in a par 4 format. On the front, the team of James Vercher, Richard, Joe Gongora and Bobby Kimball won with minus 11. Minus 13 won the back for the foursome of West, Pritchett, Cap Hollier and Dillard Darbonne. …

In the Friday 2 ball at Zaharias, the team of Vercher, Derrick Wolf, Darbonne and Roger Koch scored a sweep. They were minus 4 on the front and minus 2 on the back. …

There was also a sweep in the Thursday 2 ball, which was played in a par-4 format because of wet conditions. The team of West, MacNeil, Richard and Pritchett won the front with minus 11 and the back with minus 10. …

The Wednesday Zaharias DogFight was also contested in a par-4 format. Minus 13 won the front for the trio of Ron LaSalle, Huebel and Everest Baker, while the team of Ed Holley, Richard and Don Flood took the back with minus 12.

Closest to the pin winners were Ron Mistrot (No. 7) and Vercher (No. 12).
