Nederland Police probe tire slashings

NEDERLAND — Nederland Police are investigating a rash of tire slashings that have occurred over a three-week period in the parking lot of Mid-County Shopping Center.

A total of six vehicles have had their tires either punctured or slashed between Jan. 22 and Feb. 11 in front of three businesses in the 1000 block of Nederland Avenue, Nederland Assistant Police Chief Gary Porter said.

On Jan. 22, there were three occurrences outside Luke’s Icehouse and on Jan. 29 there was one report outside Exygon. Then, on Feb. 6, there was one report outside Dollar General and another report of a tire slashing outside Dollar General on Feb. 11, Porter said.

“My advice to the public is to keep an eye out for suspicious activity and if you do see something suspicious, give us a call,” Porter said.

Investigating the crimes, which are considered criminal mischief, is difficult. There are no suspects and no video at this time.

Porter theorizes the suspect is either doing the crimes “out of meanness or has some sort of ax to grind with a business.”

“We are keeping a close eye on the parking lot and officers are being diligent,” he said. “And people who do stuff like this usually tell somebody.”

Persons with information about the tire slashing can call the Nederland Police Department at 723-1516.
