Helping hands needed to clean PA parks Saturday

Port Arthur city parks are slated for a clean up Saturday when a group of volunteers dubbed “The Helping Hands,” roll up their sleeves to tackle trash and beautify the city.
Organized by District 2 City Councilwoman Tiffany Hamilton, the Saturday event is the second in as many months.
Last month volunteers collected trash and debris at Pleasure Island, and this Saturday beginning from 8 a.m. until noon, the group will meet at Rose Hill Park, then fan out to other parks around the city.
“We do this because we live here. We want to straighten up, to make our home presentable,” Hamilton said.
With Port Arthur in a growth pattern, it is more important than ever for the city to look its best, Hamilton said.
“We are looking to grow and expand, and as we invite investors Port Arthur needs to be presentable to help encourage them to do business in the city,” she said.
Last month about 30 volunteers representing individuals, groups and others participated in The Helping Hands first cleanup.
Some of those helping to clean up their sister city were even from Groves and Nederland, Hamilton said.
Those who would like to participate in Saturday’s parks cleanup should arrive at Rose Hill by 8 a.m. for breakfast. Assignments to area parks will be provided during breakfast.
Volunteers are encouraged to wear either tennis shoes or work boots to avoid any glass littering area parks.
Work gloves and safety vest will be provided, though a volunteer can bring their own.
Water and hand sanitizer will also be provided.
Once trash is collected at assigned parks, and left for city employees to pick up, volunteers should meet again at Rose Hill for lunch at 11 a.m. and a debriefing.
Hamilton said during her campaign for the City Council seat, part of her campaign platform was to affect a positive change for a better future.
Helping to clean and beautifying the city is a way that anyone can get involved to bring that positive change.
Volunteers from the group are also available to perform limited emergency and very minor home repairs. Call 409-300-5791 if in need of assistance.
