BEAUMONT — Lauren Dannelley held Houston to one earned run on four hits over five innings, and Lamar came away with a 4-3 softball victory over Houston to close a Tuesday doubleheader. Houston won the first game 8-4.
Dannelley (3-3), who actually made just her second start, struck out a season-high five batters for the Cardinals (19-12), who earned their first victory over the Cougars (16-16) in program history. It was the eighth time the two programs squared off.
For Lamar, Brynn Baca went 2 for 2 with a run scored and two RBI. Her two-run single in the third and double in the fifth keyed the win.
Sarah Ragsdale and Savannah Heebner each lined two hits for Lamar. Laura Napoli threw two shutout innings for the save.
Lamar fell behind 8-1 in the sixth inning of the first game only to cut into the deficit with three runs in the seventh. Brittany Rodriguez, Sable Hankins and Stephanie Meeuwsen had two hits apiece for LU, but Rodriguez failed to reach first base in the nightcap, ending a 26-game streak of doing so.
Ciara Luna (8-3) allowed nine hits and three earned runs in five innings to suffer the loss.
