With just one week left in the regular season, the Lamar State College Port Arthur Seahawks softball team earned a split against San Jacinto College-South in Houston on Monday afternoon.
The Seahawks, now 26-22 overall and 12-7 in Region 14 play, dropped the first game to San Jac 7-2 before rebounding for a 2-1 pitching-duel win in Game 2.
The Hawks are now two games up on San Jacinto with a strong grip on third place in the South Zone Division of Region XIV. The top four teams advance to the regional tournament at the end of the month. San Jacinto is the host team for this year’s tourney.
Sophomore Rebecca Hernandez earned the complete-game win, allowing one earned run on just five hits with one walk. The Hawks’ Sierra Miller picked up three walks and had a run batted in on a fielder’s choice that gave LSCPA a 1-0 lead in the first.
The deciding run came in the fifth when Kayla Sheridan scored on a passed ball. She opened the inning with a single, reached second on a sacrifice by Bailey Suza and third on a groundout by Hernandez.
Hernandez allowed two of her five hits in the sixth when San Jacinto doubled and singled to score their one run of the game.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Seahawks scored their two runs on home runs by Miller and Alexis Perez, two of five hits in the game.
Angelica Rogers took the loss for LSCPA, allowing five earned runs on seven hits with six walks, one strikeout and two home runs allowed.
The Seahawks get back to work with a doubleheader Friday at Alvin College and Saturday at Galveston College. Both sets start at 1 p.m.
