Port Neches-Groves has won its first state baseball championship Saturday afternoon, beating Grapevine 4-2 in the Class 5A final at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
Pitcher Brandon Morse was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. He allowed four hits in a complete-game performance.
It was the fourth time PNG (34-8-2) had made the state rounds in history (1958, 2000, 2004). The highest the Indians had finished was second in the 2000 4A playoffs.
The game started an hour later than scheduled because of the length of the previous game, a 1A final between eventual champion Abbott and Fayetteville.
