FISHING: $1,000 top prize at stake in S.A.L.T. Memorial Classic

A $1,000 grand prize awarded in memory of Stan Armstrong is considered a big draw to the 44th annual S.A.L.T. Memorial Classic, scheduled for May 26-27 on Pleasure Island.

Cheniere Energy Inc. is sponsoring the top prize in the tournament organized by the Sabine Chapter of the Saltwater Angler’s League of Texas. The tournament offers cash prizes in the adult division for speckled trout, redfish, flounder, black drum, sheepshead, croaker, blackjack redfish, redfish with the most spots and a live flounder bonus. The “free kids” division, which awards rod and reels to first-place finishers and trophies to the top three anglers, includes 11 categories.

Weigh-ins are from 2-6 p.m. May 26 and 11-1 p.m. May 27 at the S.A.L.T. Clubhouse, 900 T.B. Ellison Pkwy., Pleasure Island. Anglers will gather at 3 p.m. Sunday for an awards ceremony and prize drawing.

S.A.L.T. introduces youths to fishing and teaches them about conversation of fisheries and natural resources.

Memorial Classic tournament tickets are available online at saltclub.net and at Pete Jorgensen Marine, Outcast Tacke & Arms, West End Hardware, Sportsman’s Supply, County Home & Outdoors, Causeway Bait & Tackle, Bobby’s Mini Storage, Burton Boat Works and B&B Auction. Registration is $40 for anglers 16 and older and includes a T-shirt.
