A Port Arthur woman is recovering from smoke inhalation following a cooking-related fire Sunday, authorities said.

Port Arthur Fire Department personnel were called to the 1000 block of 9th Avenue at 2:13 p.m. Sunday after a person in the area saw the house fire.

It was initially unknown if someone was inside, but first responders later learned there was a person on the scene trying to kick the door in.

When firefighters arrived there was heavy smoke and fire coming from the right side of the home, which had burglar bars, Battalion Chief Patrick Murphy said.

The burglar bars were eventually cut.

Interim Fire Chief Robert Havens said three people, a woman, her adult son and his wife occupied the home.

Firefighters entered the home and were able to recover the wife of the adult son, who was eventually taken to UTMB in Galveston for treatment for smoke inhalation. She is currently in stable condition.

The female homeowner and son were able to make it outside the structure and were located at a church near the home.

Havens said the cause of the fire appears to be cooking-related and is still under investigation.

The vast majority of fires in homes stem from cooking incidents, whether it’s a grease fire, something unattended on the stove or a malfunctioning appliance, Havens added.
