The mother of a special needs child that died from severe malnutrition after she reportedly abandoned him with an adult child was sentenced to 50 years in prison this week.

Tina Louis, 43, was found guilty on two counts of injury to a child and sentenced Thursday in Judge Raquel West’s court.

Her son, King Dewey, 4, died May 31, 2022 at a home shared by her daughter Kirsten Louis, 24, and boyfriend Jaylin Lewis, 26.

Tina Louis had reportedly dropped Dewey, who had Down Syndrome, off for “the weekend” with Kirsten Louis in December and never returned.

Testimony in the trial showed the daughter told her mother the child would not eat and was told to give him milk and vitamins. She never returned to care for her child.

Dr. Miguel Laboy, a medical examiner who works with Forensic Medical Management Services in Beaumont as well as in Nashville, Tennessee, provided information from Dewey’s autopsy. The child weighed 19 pounds and his bones protruded from his skin — pelvic, ribs and spine.

Dewey’s body was already in early stages of decomposition and there was postmortem insect activity, maggots, when medical help was called.

The official cause of death was severe malnutrition with a second cause of acute bronchial pneumonia.

Jaylin Lewis was found guilty in August and sentenced to 60 years in prison in connection with two counts of injury to a child in the death of Dewey.

Testimony in Lewis’ trial revealed the child had been kept in a locked closet for periods of time.

Prior to Lewis’ trial Kirsten Louis pleaded guilty to two, first-degree felony counts of injury to a child. She was sentenced to 30 years on each charge to run concurrently and waived the right to an appeal.
