Aces, eagles, birdie streaks explode at The Babe

Lots of fireworks in the Super Saturday Game at Babe Zaharias, starting
with a hole in one authored by Don MacNeil. McNeil used a pitching wedge from
100 yards for the ace, which was witnessed by Craig Fontenot, Ed Holley and
Chris Ward. Other highlights included eagles by Larry Stansbury on holes No. 3
and No. 9 — both 5 pars — and a front nine 30 authored by Jim Jordan that
included five consecutive birdies. Jordan’s rampage helped his team of Harrell
Guidry, Cody Metts and Joe Vanderweg win the front with minus 7 in a two best
ball format. The team of Larry Johnson, Mike Lansford, Troy Touchet and Don
Duplan prevailed on the back with minus 5 . . . Tommy Duhon of Bridge City
also got to celebrate a hole in one at Zaharias last week. Duhon used a 9-iron
from 128 yards on No. 2. Witnesses were Jordan, Charles Leard and Paul
Bourgeous . . . Charlie Huckaby of Port Neches sank his second shot from
100-yards for an eagle 2 on the par 4, 4th at Babe Zaharias. Huckaby sank the
shot with a pitching wedge. Witnesses were Bob West, Dillard Darbonne and
Roger Baumer . . . Bernie Johnson got a double thrill by shooting a 79 last
week at Zaharias. It was Johnson’s best ever round and enabled him to shoot
his age . . . Braden Bailey left little doubt he can hang with the big boys
in his second collegiate tournament last weekend at Olympia Fields in Chicago.
The PN-G ex was Baylor’s low man, firing rounds of 70-73-72 for a 54-hole
score of five-over 215. That was good for a T18 among 76 players in the
star-studded 15-team field. Especially satisfying for Bailey was the fact only
one player from Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech posted a better score than he
did. UT’s Doug Ghim shot a 209. Florida State edged Oklahoma State by three
shots to win the team title . . . All three players with area ties made the
cut in the second of four Web.com Tour playoff tournaments, with Dawie van der
Walt leading the way with a T7 finish. Van der Walt, who was 11-under-par,
made $32,250. Michael Arnaud and Andrew Landry made the cut on the number,
with Arnaud going on to finish T39 ($4,300) and Landry collecting $2,280 after
slipping to 76th. Tournament No. 3 is Thursday through Sunday in Columbus,
Ohio . . . Tre trio of Rick Pritchett, Jeff Rhinehart and Roddy Weatherly
posted minus 7 to win the front nine best two ball competition in the Senior
Plus Game at Babe Zaharias. On the back, Dennis Walsh, Cecil Norris, Wes
McGuire and Dale Richey won with minus six . . . The team of Adam Noel, Gene
Hardy, Bruce Lee and Bobby Shelton rolled up 20 points to win the Babe
Zaharias DogFight. Teams captained by Cap Hollier, Pritchett and Gary Whitfill
tied for second with 17 points. Closest to the pin winners were David Sturgal
(No. 2, No. 7), Larry Vicknair (No.12) and Joe Gongora (No. 15) . . . The
Senior Game at The Babe was played in a 4 person, 3 ball format. On the front,
the team of Jordan, Ed Hetzel, Carl Certa and Paul Duplantis won with even
par. The foursome of Larry Thompson, Pritchett, Jim Cooper and Pete Reobroi
took with back with plus 2. Closest to the pin winners were Bob West (No. 2),
Hetzel (No. 7), Bob Byerly (No. 12) and Jordan (No. 15).
