According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, the citizens of Jefferson County are being targeted again by scam artists.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has received reports from citizens stating that the Jefferson County Warrant Division is calling with a warrant out for the person’s arrest. The warrant is for a criminal offense or for missing a federal grand jury.
According to the sheriff’s office, victims are being scammed two ways. One, they are being told to go to the store, get a Green Dot Credit Card and give the caller the card information so they can pay the bond or fine so the victims does not go to jail.
The second way people are being scammed is, the callers tells the victims that they need to get a certain amount of money and meet the caller at a certain location while staying on the phone with them the whole time.
Each time the scam artists call a person they use different names and different phone numbers. The numbers cannot be traced.
We strongly encourage citizens to be cautious of anyone calling and demanding money over the phone. Do not meet strangers and pay them money.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will never call anyone and demand payment for a warrant over the phone. The sheriff’s office will not require anyone to get money and meet anyone for payment. According to the sheriff’s office, no legitimate organization should contact you to make any payment with a GreenDot Card.
If anyone should receive a call from one of a scammers call local law enforcement agency to make a report.
The sheriff’s office is actively investigating the cases.
