A Jefferson County grand jury has indicted Raul Aguilar Trejo, 39, of Port Arthur for first-degree murder in the Jan. 26 shooting death of a Sabine Pass man.

Court documents released Thursday show Trejo, captured five days after the shooting, is accused of going to 7530 S. Fourth St., located in what officers said was a rural part of Sabine Pass and, accompanied by others, entering the home without permission in the early hours of the morning.

There, police said, Trejo shot Johah Jarritt Rivera, who was at the home and who attempted to protect others there from Trejo. Police said Rivera later died from his injuries inflicted by a single gunshot wound fired by Trejo, which hit Rivera in the mouth.

Trejo was captured after an attempted forgery was committed at Chase Bank on State Highway 347 in Port Arthur on Jan. 31. Trejo was also indicted for forgery in that case, which involved a 73-year-old victim.

Rivera’s death was one of four unrelated homicides committed in two days in Port Arthur on Jan. 25-26. There were only five murders committed in the city in all of 2017.
