Down to a tie for 82nd early in in the second round of the Shriners Charity for Children Open in Las Vegas Friday, Chris Stroud roared back with four birdies and an eagle in a five-hole stretch to assure he would be around for the final 36 holes.

Stroud, who actually climbed all the way to eighth, settled for a 68 after three bogeys on his incoming nine and is tied for 34th at 135. That leaves him five strokes off the pace of four players — Brian Stuard, Patrick Cantlay, Lucas Glover and Kevin Na — tied for the lead at 130.

The news wasn’t so good for Stroud’s fellow PNG ex Andrew Landry. Hurt by a double bogey on his third hole of the day, Landry shot even par 71 for 139. That missed the five-under-par cut of 137 by two strokes.

Stroud, after shooting 67 on Thursday, was one over after four holes on Friday. Playing the back nine first, he got rolling with a 59-foot birdie bomb on the par-3 14th. That was followed by an 18-foot eagle on the short, par-4 15th, a birdie from 7-6 at the par-5 16th, a birdie from 15-4 at the par-3, 17th and a birdie from 7-7 on the par-4 18th.

A bogey on the next hole, however, blunted Stroud’s momentum. He did get one more birdie at 4 to move up to 10th, then fell back with bogeys at 6 and 7. He then failed to birdie the par 5, 9th after being 54 feet from the pin in two.

Landry’s missed cut was his third in four starts in the 2019-20 season. He overcame the early double bogey with four birdies in a seven-hole stretch, but two bogeys on the way in knocked him off the cut line.
